The Professional Fighters League (PFL) recently announced the indefinite postponement of PFL MENA 10, which was scheduled to take place on June 19 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This marks the second time in 2026 that a PFL event in Saudi Arabia has been postponed, raising questions about the future of mixed martial arts (MMA) in the region. The reasons behind these cancellations differ, but the impact on the sport's growth in Saudi Arabia is significant. This article explores the details of the postponements, the factors involved, and what this means for MMA fans and fighters in Saudi Arabia.

PFL Mena 10 Postponement

PFL MENA 10 was set to feature several exciting matchups, including Saudi star Hattan Alsaif facing Dania Ouhachi, as well as quarterfinal bouts in the welterweight and flyweight tournaments. The announcement on June 17 stated the event was postponed "until further notice" due to "internal operational and event readiness considerations." Unlike the previous cancellation earlier this year, the PFL did not cite regional security concerns this time.

No new date has been announced, but the organization emphasized its commitment to returning to Jeddah in the future. This postponement interrupts the momentum the PFL has been building in Saudi Arabia since launching the MENA league in 2024.

The Second Cancellation in Saudi Arabia This Year

Earlier in 2026, PFL MENA 9 was scheduled for May 8 in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. That event was postponed on April 9, with the PFL explaining they were finalizing updated plans for the 2026 season. Ticket holders received refunds, and the fights were promised for a future event. However, the Al Khobar event was eventually removed from the calendar and listed as canceled by event trackers.

The Al Khobar cancellation was widely linked by MMA outlets to regional instability and tensions involving Iran and Saudi Arabia, although the PFL did not officially confirm this. Security concerns and uncertainty in the Middle East were discussed as possible reasons behind the postponement.

Different Reasons for Each Cancellation

The two cancellations in Saudi Arabia this year appear to stem from different causes:

  • Al Khobar (May 8)

The postponement was likely influenced by regional security concerns. The Middle East has experienced growing tensions, and this may have affected the decision to delay the event. The PFL’s silence on this matter left room for speculation, but the timing and context suggest geopolitical factors played a role.

  • Jeddah (June 19)

The latest postponement was attributed to internal operational issues and event readiness. This distinction is important because it indicates the problem may be organizational rather than related to external geopolitical factors. The PFL’s statement focused on ensuring the event meets their standards before proceeding.

Understanding these differences helps clarify the challenges the PFL faces in establishing a stable presence in Saudi Arabia.

Why Saudi Arabia Matters for PFL and MMA

Saudi Arabia has become a key market for the PFL’s international expansion. The launch of PFL MENA in 2024 was backed by significant support from Saudi authorities and positioned the region as a major pillar in the league’s global strategy. The country’s investment in sports infrastructure and hosting international events reflects its ambition to become a hub for MMA and other sports.

The postponements disrupt this vision but also highlight the complexities of operating in a region with evolving political and operational landscapes. For MMA fans in Saudi Arabia, the PFL’s presence offers opportunities to see high-level competition and for local fighters to gain exposure on a global stage.

Athletes like Hattan Alsaif and others in the welterweight and flyweight tournaments face uncertainty about when they will compete next. Postponements can disrupt training cycles, career momentum, and earning opportunities.

MMA enthusiasts in Saudi Arabia miss out on live events that showcase local and international talent. The cancellations may dampen enthusiasm temporarily, but the PFL’s commitment to return offers hope.

The PFL’s involvement has helped raise MMA’s profile in Saudi Arabia. Delays could slow growth, but they also provide time to address operational challenges and ensure future events meet expectations.

What’s Next for PFL in Saudi Arabia?

The PFL has expressed its intention to return to Jeddah and continue building the MENA league. To succeed, the organization will need to:

  • Resolve internal operational issues to ensure event readiness

  • Maintain strong relationships with Saudi partners and authorities

  • Adapt to regional dynamics while prioritizing safety and quality

  • Communicate transparently with fans and fighters about future plans

The league’s ability to navigate these challenges will determine how quickly MMA can regain momentum in Saudi Arabia.
